The administration of US President Joe Biden has just announced a plan to promote offshore wind power projects to increase the use of renewable energy.
The US Department of the Interior stated that the government aims to produce 15 GW of offshore wind power by 2035, enough to power more than 5 million homes. The US also seeks to reduce the cost of offshore floating wind power generation by 70% by 2035.
Speaking at a news conference, White House national climate adviser Gina McCarthy said the US administration is launching efforts to embrace the new technology of floating offshore wind power. This advanced technology will help the US build farms in deep waters where it is difficult to install turbines on the seabed but with strong winds.
Earlier, the Biden administration announced a goal to produce 30 GW of offshore wind by 2030. According to US officials, two-thirds of the potential for offshore wind is located in deep waters – such as off the coasts of California and Oregon that require floating wind turbines.
The US government has announced funding of nearly 50 million USD to research and develop this program. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said the department will work with the Home Office to ensure that offshore wind projects do not affect fishing and wildlife habitat.
